While there’s no doubt that this marvel of the contemporary world has helped businesses to perform many of their daily tasks in a fraction of the time that used to be required, it’s also true that the Web as presented a huge temptation for employees. Even your hardest-working, most dedicated employee will be tempted to use the Internet for personal reasons during business hours. If it’s just a matter of a worker doing a little personal banking during his or her lunch hour, there’s probably no reason for concern. However, all too often in today’s business climate employees waste a tremendous amount of time on the Internet. In fact, studies show that the vast majority of employees visit non-work-related websites each and every day.
So what does “cyberloafing” have to do with retaining good employees? As it turns out, these two issues are very much related. In order to increase employee productivity levels and decrease the amount of time workers waste online, many business owners and managers have resorted to blocking websites. Although there’s no doubt that Internet blocking is a useful tool in certain situations, it simply doesn’t work in business. Blocking websites often involves blocking entire categories of sites, many of which your employees need to do their jobs. Even more importantly, Internet blocking is a clear indication that you don’t trust your employees. If you don’t trust them, they won’t trust you. They’ll also most likely resent your attempt to control their online access, which will lead to resentment and an even lower level of productivity.
